Background
I have been buying vinyl records for the last 20 years and have played all my gigs with vinyl. In the last 4 years I have been carrying a USB stick for "just in case" scenarios. Finally, last Xmas I decided to take the plunge to explore more of the digital side of releases that are sometimes not available on vinyl and to prepare music for special circumstances when a DJ always wished they had "that" record! I.e. It was a very calculated and well researched purchase.
Performance
Pioneer did not disappoint me. In fact after a week I was able to incorporate it into my setup and I just love the flexibility. Build is solid, even though it is a light piece of kit. Touchscreen and Rekordbox software are amazing. I would use this over a computer with Serato/Traktor ANY DAY! You will not miss the CD function, That is a thing of the past for DJ's and also drastically reduces the likelihood of something mechanical breaking in the future . The sound quality is very good, however I would recommend to ONLY use WAV or AIFF to get the most out of the equipment. I hope at some point there is FLAC support. Currently there is not. You can connect entire hard drives to the XDJ or use Rekordbox with your computer. The XDJ work as a soundcard as well, so you are getting lots of flexibility. The search function is great but to get the most out of it you have to start grooming your digital collection in Rekordbox. Then it all makes a lot of sense and gets easy if you make it a routine to manage your digital content. The "bells and whistles" functions for looping and whatnot are also great fun but I don't use them too much. They are useful at times but I believe less is more!
Conclusion
If you are ambitious about playing in clubs I would not recommend anything under this model or without a touchscreen. The jog wheel size and feel as well as the touchscreen (just added to the new flagship cdj nexus) are an essential aspects you will most likely re-encounter in any decent club.
The price point is high. I could have bought at least 3 Technics 1210 MK2's or an entry level XDJ for the money but if you use them as your choice of DJ equipment or you are building a real hybrid setup then you cannot avoid them and they are a good investment. That is the only downside but the advantages to launch your DJ career or boost your arsenal of DJ weapons and skills far outweigh the price mid to long term.
