The Artiphon Mini Synthesizer at a glance
The spherical Artiphon Orba 3 is a combination of mini synthesizer, sample player, Looper and MIDI controller. The practical device with its minimalist design has eight sensitive touchpads on its smooth surface that handle velocity, Vibrato and pressure.Sensitive movement and tilt sensors inside evaluate various actions such as shaking, rubbing or panning and transmit this to the internal sound generation or as a controller value to a DAW. A vibration motor provides direct Feedback information about various situations; comparable to the Shock-Controller for games consoles. The Orba app makes it easy to manage and arrange songs, loops, samples, presets and settings. Thanks to the built-in microphone, any sound can be sampled and immediately transformed into a playable instrument. Whether it's a knock on the table top, a nail scratching metal or the tap turning on... anything can now be an important sound that becomes part of a performance or a new song with Orba 3.
Features
As a digital Mini Synthesizer, Orba uses subtractive and physical modeling synthesis to generate all sounds with a maximum of ten voices. These are distributed across the four tracks of the built-in loop player. In addition, the sample player is a real enrichment for the practical creative tool. The internal sample memory is sufficiently large at 2 GB, so several sounds can be played simultaneously and layered musically. A switchable quantizer places all note entries accurately into the grid, so that it simply grooves perfectly and is rhythmically on point. Furthermore, songs can have a length of up to 128 bars. Thanks to Bluetooth MIDI & Audio and USB-C port, Orba 3 connects to most laptops and can therefore be integrated into the DAW. Literally in the blink of an eye eg. to change several effect parameters in Ableton at the same time, it is very easy. Orba combines very sensitive gesture control and performance-oriented operation in one package. Spontaneously make music with friends or contribute a part for a production, a spontaneous idea can be worked out on the spot. The 1250 mA Li-Po battery with up to 4 hours of operating time and a built-in loudspeaker with 3 watts of power guarantee fun without being tied to one place.

The third Generation comes with 300 sample-based sounds that can be used to create ad hoc beats and melodies in the integrated Looper. The highlight, however, is probably the omnidirectional MEMS microphone for recording samples. By the way: the sample engine automatically cuts samples and sets the pitch. The USB interface now also functions as a high-resolutionaudio Output interface. Thanks to the improved labelling, the round device is much easier to use in most cases.
