It's an open secret that the "54" in Golden Age Projects COMP-54 is a reference to the legendary Neve 2254 compressor. Like its role model, its control element works on the basis of a diode bridge. In terms of sound, however, the COMP-54 is somewhat brighter and more direct than the 2254.
In contrast to compressors that use optocouplers, VCAs or FET transistors to control the signal level, diode bridge compressors use rectifying bridges. Although this limits the possible control times to the switch speeds of the diodes , it enables fast attack and release times of up to 0.25 ms. In addition, the signal can be processed symmetrically with little effort.
The original 2254 features high-quality Carnhill transformers, which have a particular influence on the sound. If you want to get even closer to the smooth and creamy sound of the 2254, Golden Age Projects has left extra space on its circuit board to allow retrofitting with Carnhill transformers.
