Strymon Iridium In-Depth Tour with Pete Celi
The Strymon Iridium at a glance
If you integrate the innovative Strymon Iridium into your stage rig, you can confidently leave your heavy amp behemoths at home. The compact pedal presents itself as a successful combination of an amp simulation packed with three authentic amp models and an individually and extensively customizable IR Cabinet section. Here, the effect tinkerers from Strymon placed particular emphasis on a true-to-the-original Tone stack, which acts interactively when operating the treble, bass and trebles as in the original. In addition, the Iridium offers outputs in stereo format for room-filling setups and a connection for expression pedals to control the volume, which also processes external MIDI control commands via Midi EXP Cable without any problems.
Authentic amp sounds thanks to Matrix Modeling technology
The basis of the amp sounds of the Strymon Iridium is the innovative Matrix Modeling process, which skilfully realizes all the sonic details and characteristics of the prototype, from the tube character to the correct behaviour of the Tone stack. The 'Round Amp' offers classic cleans and overdrive sounds with traditional US characters. In 'Chime' mode, on the other hand, clear and shimmering sounds of the brilliant channel of the British model are available. Fans of hotter overdrive sounds of the Blues and rock will finally get their money's worth in the 'Punch' mode with its distinctive Plexi character.
Customizable IR Cabinet Section.
Behind the amp, Strymon's Iridium puts nine pre-installed premium IRs from professional suppliers such as OwnHammer, Celestion, cabIR and Valhallir at your fingertips, presenting successful simulations of authentic speaker cabinets ranging from small 1x12" boxes to 8x12" cabinets loaded with eight Alnico speakers. Thanks to the front USB port, you can also edit your own Impulse Responses via the free Strymon Impulse Manager software and add them to the collection, making your favourite sound on stage, at rehearsal and on the couch at home always within reach.
I bought this to enable me to record guitar without the need to Mike up my valve amp for my releases. I tried it out before buying and as it reacted so well to my picking and fretwork. It really did emulate so accurately the qualities of a valve amp. It’s modelling of the popular three amps and cabinet combinations. The drive and volume have loads of “headroom” to work with and the tones provide colour. I have recorded a lead solo with it already and it was frankly easy to set up and it sounded as if I had miked up a Plexi and all done on my desk and phones in silence to everyone else. Really good. Only reason I have given less than 5 stars, I think although the box is strong the knobs and switches could be more robust, so if you intend to use it in the audio I think it will be fine but if you intend to gig (I have regularly gigged for nearly 40 years ) a good whack on the knobs may well damage it. However, studio wise it’s now my go to for recording guitar and space is saved!
