Toontrack's Modern Pop Piano EKX is an impressive expansion for EZkeys 2 that combines the warm, organic sound aesthetic of a carefully sampled 1950s Grotrian-Steinweg upright piano with modern sound design elements. This unique combination of classic instrument and contemporary production technology opens up new creative possibilities for music productions in the fields of pop, ambient, EDM and experimental music.
At the heart of this EKX is the characterful Grotrian Steinweg piano, which is known for its colorful, clear and yet warm sound. The recordings were made at the renowned Riksmixningsverket Studio in Stockholm under the direction of sound engineer Linn Fijal. Various pairs of microphones - including classics such as the Neumann U47 FET, Coles 4038 and AKG C24 - captured the authentic sound of the piano from different perspectives and with varying room proportions. The result is a versatile sound base that ranges from purist-acoustic to complex-textured soundscapes.
The piano's source material was resampled several times and processed with granular and time-stretching effects. In addition, analog and digital outboard processors such as compressors, EQs, saturators and tape emulations were used, including renowned devices such as the Hologram Microcosm and the Eventide H9000. The Modern Pop Piano EKX offers a total of 80 individually designed presets, which are divided into three categories:
Natural: Acoustic-oriented sounds with a subtle spatial effect and sparing use of effects.
Processed: Processed sounds with rich layers, creative reverb spaces and more intense sound refinement.
Experimental: Unconventional, atmospheric textures that combine the piano with modulated synthesizer sounds and heavily distorted effects.
In addition to the extensive presets, the EKX also contains a MIDI library specially developed for this instrument. This offers basic musical ideas that can be used directly or adapted using the powerful functions of EZkeys 2 versatile, making it ideal for a quick introduction to new song ideas.
