The Electro Harmonix SuperEgo Synth Engine is a guitar effects pedal providing a variety of different synthesizer effects.
The Electro Harmonix SuperEgo is a polyphonic synth engine, with advanced controls for customising the attack and decay features. Its Auto mode captures and freezes notes and chords as they are played, and the Latch mode enables a polyphonic pad to be created and played over.
The Glissando feature is fully controllable, and the inclusion of an effects loop enables other effects to be mixed into the wet signal of the pedal.
The main features of the Electro Harmonix SuperEgo Synth Guitar Effects Pedal include:
One of the most interesting pedals ive come across lately, a more sophisticated edition of the freezer introduced earlier by ehx. Primarily a peculiar kind of sampler that captures segments of sound and it also features some synthesis functions like glide and some sort of envelope, a technology which was mainly a software tool is now brought into a stompbox. ive been using it for a few months now and it has become essential to my playing, i really like equipment that extends the physical abilities of the guitar especially the sustain so with the superego you can control this from short up to infinite. It works in three modes latch, momentary and auto. Latch and momentary made their debut with the freezer pedal. The auto mode is a surprisingly nice new feature that once set tracks and sustains sound by itself, pretty neat although i wish it could track a little bit better (adding a compressor or a booster before the superego might help). My favourite mode is the the latch, you can built a massive wall of sound in this mode add a harmonizer in the effects loop through some reverb to fatten it up and blissfull pads will emerge from your amp. The tweakability of it is enourmous especialy in conjunction with other effects units. Also it works great with other instuments.
The greatest pedal Ive ever had. I have the freeze, but this can one do the same plus many features more. The gliss control gives the portamento control, creating glides from one chord to another or whatever you play. There’s a built-in effects loop, which expands the pedal, putting the tremolo to the loop creates interesting rhythmic patterns that you can play along with. It freezes what is in the fx loop.
There is one problem, guitarist with larger foot, could change the mode (latch, auto) pressing the bypass switch. They are to close. I covered the mode switch with the wine cork and mounting tape. Works great and not alter the pedal.
A great piece of equipment though I think a little overpriced. The switch is very precise and takes some getting used to but once understood it can be used to create some superb sounds. The built effects loop is excellent though given that any effect linked in this way effectively limits it to use with the Super Ego I suggest using something like the new(ish) Korg or Zoom multi effect pedal for the loop. One last thing, I suggest putting the Ego at the end of a chain as anything used after it, while the effect is running, will alter the sound! A tool to be played with but ultimately a great addition to the pedal board. Take fifty off the price.
