Detailed view of the Mono Mk2 analog synthesizer with sequencer

How much modulation does a synthesizer like this need? Norand: YES!

The Mono Mk2 from Norand is an analogue desktop synthesizer with a 303-style sequencer whose possibilities can easily compete with those of a large modular system. At first glance, there are two analogue oscillators of the same type with waveforms that can be blended continuously from sine to triangle to square to sawtooth, hardsync, Thru-Zero FM, mixer with saturation, an 18db state variable Multimode filter that can handle bandpass, Lowpass and Highpass with all variants in between, a VCA with overdrive and an ADSR envelope. X-MOD and X-ENV can also be found at the bottom right of the device. With these features, one might assume that the Mono Mk2 tends towards typical acid sounds and the usual repertoire of 2-oscillator sounds. Yes, this is definitely possible, but the instrument only really comes to life when you animate one or more parameters in the sequencer using Accent and/or use the 13 very nimble X-ENVelopes attack/decay envelopes and a total of 20 X-MODulators. X-MOD is an LFO with several waveforms that can run freely, be synchronized to Clock or reach into the audio range with/without Keytracking, which is a jewel for complex FM sounds. Every synth parameter can be modulated, and there are also some variants respectively switchable ranges. With so much dynamism in the sound, lively sequences, meandering basslines, artifact-like clusters, Buchla bongos, metallic FM thunderstorms and much more are truly no problem. In terms of sound and modulation options, this compact device can certainly give some of the big names a run for their money.

Extended 303-style sequencer!

The Mono Mk2 sequencer has it all. The operation is similar to a 303, but is much clearer thanks to the TR grid. Each pattern can be up to 64 steps long and can be saved with its own scaling, shuffle and divider factor. The large keys correspond to the narrow key strip, so you always know what is happening in the sequence, even without Display. The sequencer strip is a further development that makes it possible to connect sequencer steps with the swipe of a finger. Version 2 is also supported by the fact that the keys are RGB-illuminated, which enables color-coded differentiation of functions. A highlight are the expressive 3D keys, which not only allow notes to be entered; they are also velocity-sensitive, generate Aftertouch and act as Pitchbender for each note. In addition to pitch and note length, microshift (offset before/after the clock), ratcheting, trigger probability, and naturally, Slide and Accent can be programmed for each step. Those who like to work with randomness or have an uninspired moment will be pleased with the extensive randomizer function, which is also part of the sequencer. Notes, parameter ranges, whole steps, Ratcheting and other parameters can be randomized by the machine. With the MicroSD card, the Mono Mk2 offers access to 64 projects, each of which stores 64 patterns; that's 4096 patterns in direct access! The sound settings are also saved in the patterns.

Connections

The Mono Mk2 can communicate with a DAW via USB-C (MIDI, Device only) and accepts input from a USB master keyboard(Host). For operation in pretty much any hardware setup, there are MIDI In, Out and Thru, which are terminated with the supplied MIDI-TRS adapters. The audio output is led out of the instrument with a large jack. The control voltage inputs Clock and Reset are available for synchronization with a modular system respectively analogue sequencer.
