A looper is a device commonly used by guitarists, but also by musicians in general, to repeat a specific melody or phrase played on their guitar, through vocals, or on other instruments. You play the desired section once, record it with the looper, and it then plays it back in an infinite loop. This allows musicians to layer different melodies or rhythms—known as layers or overdubs—on top of each other, effectively enabling a solo musician to perform an entire song. A guitar looper is an extremely useful practice tool as it facilitates jam sessions without needing another musician. Solo performers can use it on stage to create a fuller sound and compensate for missing musicians.
A phrase looper is a highly useful device for guitarists. Essentially, it is a recording tool that allows musicians to play a musical phrase or rhythm, record it, and loop it repeatedly. This is particularly practical for solo practice, as it enables you to create your own backing track and add additional layers. For example, you can record a rhythm, loop it, and then play a melody or solo over it. A phrase looper is also excellent for songwriting, as it allows you to layer different song sections and hear how they blend together.
