Moog

Moog synthesizers are the epitome of the synthesizer, which can be traced back to the great success and sound of the Minimoog. This compact analogue synthesizer made the Moog brand world famous. Synthesizers from a wide variety of manufacturers are modelled on this compactly built synthesizer. Today, the Moog company mainly produces analogue synthesizers, but the Moog programme also includes iOS apps for smartphones and tablets, most recently supplemented with a new edition of the legendary Minimoog Model D.

About Moog synthesizers

Dr. Robert "Bob" Moog was the synthesiser pioneer who transferred the idea of synthetic sound generation to popular musical instruments. He began the first experiments in the 1950s. In 1964, Moog built the first Modular Synthesizer, which was only possible due to the change in electrical engineering - transistors replaced the tube. The Moog System 15 and Moog System 55 modular synthesizers are used by musicians all over the world, and one of the most famous releases in this context is Switched-On Bach by Wendy Carlos. The special thing about Switched-On Bach is that it is the first time that music by Bach has been implemented completely electronically by Moog synthesizers - which put the listening habits of some classical music lovers to the test when it was released at the end of the 1960s. Electronic music gains popularity through Switched-On Bach, as does Wendy Carlos' score for Stanley Kubrik's film A Clockwork Orange - also recorded on a Moog Modular Synthesizer.

Minimoog – Moog Synthesizer conquer the world

The Minimoog, which also appeared at the end of the 60s, is considered the cornerstone of analogue synthesizers with subtractive sound generation and made the Moog company successful. Whereas the previously widespread modular synthesizers were more suitable for the studio because of their size and complicated operability, the Minimoog was the first synthesizer that you play and operate like a musical instrument via a keyboard. With the Minimoog, the synthesizer gained a place in the setups of keyboard players in the 70s. From then on, a Minimoog was enthroned on top of Hammond, Mellotron, Rhodes & Co.

Moog Music built other synthesizers that have cult status today. For example, the Polymoog and the Memorymoog or compact synthesizers like the Micromoog, Multimoog, Moog Prodigy, Moog Sonic Six, Moog Rogue and Moog Source. Almost every electronic musician uses a Moog synthesizer sooner or later: e.g. Klaus Schulze, Pete Namlook, Kraftwerk, Giorgio Moroder, Pink Floyd, Jean Michel Jarre or Jan Hammer to name a few.

Moog Synthesizers today

The name Moog is linked to an idea of sound: Moog synthesizers are especially loved by musicians for their rich and fat analogue sound. Of course, the current Moog instruments benefit from the technological achievements of the early developments. Moog offers pure analogue sound - and without exception, the current Moog synthesizers are analogue synthesizers. Besides the current synthesizers like the Minimoog Voyager or the Moog Little Phatty and Moog Slim Phatty, there are also very expressive effect pedals in the Moogerfooger series for every imaginable range or the bass synthesizer Moog Minitaur. Extremely popular among synthesiser enthusiasts is the current Moog Sub 37 and, last but not least, of course, the new edition of the Minimoog Model D. iOS apps such as the Animoog are now on the market and enrich the digital age with analogue synthesiser sounds. You have a lot to discover here and must hear and play these rich sounds.
