Based on the early instruments with which the eponym and founder of the world-famous brand Epiphone, Epi Stathopoulos, once started his business, the Epiphone MM-30S A-Style Mandolin convinces with its traditional design and its powerful sound. Furthermore, the instrument is already equipped with a solid top and features carefully crafted hardware. The mandolin is refined by a thin high gloss varnish with an antique sunburst finish.
To enrich the sound with powerful and defined mid and treble frequencies, the arched top is made of solid spruce, while the body is made of laminated mahogany. At the same time, the Okoume neck with a Pau Ferro fretboard has a very accommodating feel thanks to a combination of the 356 mm scale length and a slim 27 mm nut width.
As usual for an A-style mandolin, the top is equipped with two generous F-shaped soundholes, in the middle of which a bridge made of Okoume is positioned. Furthermore, a tortoise pickguard is attached to the top, proudly bearing the maker's initials. Golden open-gear tuners round off the appearance in a very tasteful way and also guarantee precise tuning of the 8 strings.
Epiphone MM-30S AS Antique Sunburst A-StyleI did a lot of research as was moving up from a vintage non-branded Mandolin that had been used as folk accompaniment in pubs and celebratory events, probably best describes as a bit rustic, and I needed a new one.
This one met the need to progress the sound quality and avoid the “cheese grater” tendency of my old one.
It arrived safely and well packaged, and after tuning it played straight out of the box without the need to do a lot of setting up. A great upper mid range model that could hold its own at a Gig, and benefits from a reputable name and history in Epiphone.
It looks good too, so I am very pleased. No issues !
I am happy with the strings and the action against the frets, and love the sound it makes without the need for amplification. It is loud enough to be heard with other acoustic instruments and fills the room if played at home.
It has encouraged me to further my skills and continue with lessons, as the playability and sound is rewarding as you progress.
Worth spending a bit more for this one in my view for the superiority over the cheaper “beginner” models available, and attractive practical styling in a really playable Mandolin.
