Modor Music NF-1 Synthesizer Overview:

Modor NF-1 is an eight-voice polyphonic digital synthesizer manufactured in Belgium. Its structure with three oscillators each with ten waveforms, ring modulator, multimode filter, formant filter, good sounding effects, four envelopes and all kinds of modulation possibilities give it a unique selling point. The NF-1 makes no secret of its digital nature. It sounds in the best sense of the 90s, covers a lot of what had rank and name at that time and is still used today with pleasure. Due to the 7-stage envelope and a few special features in the oscillator section, the NF-1 is able to reproduce authentic sounding sounds of the Roland Alpha Juno (1986). If you know and love the old Hoover sounds from PCP, Dominator (Human Resource), and Thunderdome, you're in the right place. And yes, the NF-1 is a guarantee in the here and now for basslines, chords, pads, strings and everything else.

Sophisticated design

The asymmetrical control panel of the NF-1 may seem unusual at first glance, but after a short time you will be creating your own sounds because the control structure and signal flow are logical. Since the oscillators and envelopes share the same controls, the same parameters can be adjusted by activating several buttons simultaneously. Thanks to full MIDI implementation, 448 memory locations for sounds and a higher-level Chord Mode, the NF-1 is pleasingly suitable for live and studio use. All connections are located on the rear panel in a staggered fashion, so there is no need to sacrifice any additional height units for cables when installing the unit in a rack (6U). The included accessories include the power supply, a set of rack ears for installation in a 19" rack, and a pair of wooden side panels for those who love the vintage charm of wood on synthesizers.

The oscillators

The three oscillators are identically constructed and each offer ten waveforms. These cover the common waveforms such as sawtooth, square and triangle and even master algorithms for which a whole arsenal of additional functions would be necessary. The operation is solved in a very simple way. The modulation of the waveform and the pitch can be done directly by LFO and envelope or via the modulation matrix. The following waveforms are included:

  • SAW: pulse width modulated sawtooth
  • SQU: pulse width modulated square wave
  • TRI: pulse width modulated triangle
  • SYNC: sounds like an oscillator synchronized wave
  • ADD: additive harmonics
  • SONAR: resonant, bandpass-filtered noise
  • WIND: sound of wind instruments
  • ARC: noise in the style of arcade games
  • FM: sine wave FM
  • FBFM: sine wave FM with feedback

All three oscillators plus the noise generator and the ring modulator are combined in the mixer. Mixer levels can be modulated via the modulation matrix. For the two FM modes, there are two buttons that set the frequency ratio between FM carrier and FM modulator. Users of old Yamaha FM synthesizers will surely recognize some similarities.

The Filters

The filter section of the NF-1 shines with two different filters that might be a rarity in this combination. The first is a resonant 12 dB Multimode filter with lowpass, highpass, Bandpass and notch characteristics and downstream distortion. For modulation LFO, envelope and Tracking are prewired, since these controls work bipolar also negative modulation respectively an inversion of the waveform are no problem. The second filter is a formant filter which works with three definable vowels and appears in parallel or serial to the Multimode filter in the signal path. The results are strongly dependent on the incoming audio material and range from subtle bandpass filtering over vowel-like sounds to strong crosstalk of the bands.

The effects

The signal path is completed by the two effect units with Comb Filter and Delay. The Comb filter primarily creates all variations between the chorus and flanger. In extreme settings, a short tap on a note is enough to turn the effect completely upside down. Especially the more subtle chorus settings suit strings, pads and Chords well. The delay effect with 750ms delay time can run freely or be synchronized to the clock. Soundwise this fits in very musically and especially Dub Chords benefits from it. Naturally, every effect parameter can be animated via the modulation matrix!

The modulations

With such a wide selection, screwing new sounds is even more fun! Most modulation sources are already fixed on the control panel with different destinations (oscillators, filters). Four loopable envelopes with seven-time/level elements can be clipped to ADSR level. Two LFOs can be synchronized to Clock and offer four waveforms each. The third LFO with triangle waveform is linked to the modulation wheel on the master keyboard. Sample & Hold is also on board and equipped with its own tempo control. The modulation matrix - called "Wires" in the NF-1 - offers seven entries linking 19 sources to 86 destinations! Even modulations within the ModMatrix are possible.
