Working closely with drummer legend Steve Gadd, Yamaha has resurrected one of the most popular professional drum series and presents the New Recording Custom Drums, a re-designed drum series that offers ideal conditions for professional use in the studio. The revised New Recording Custom Drums convince with a focused and round sound with lower frequencies, suitable for every drum style and every kind of music.
North American birch serves as the basis for the recording custom drums, 6 layers of slowly grown wood are glued into a perfectly round shell and provided with a bearing edge of 30°. Specially weighted Hi-Tension Lugs should help to tickle lower frequencies out of the wood. Despite the revised, more modern design, the Recording Custom Drums retain the classic look that has shaped the drum world for so many years. Due to the increased weight of the brackets, it has been possible to make optimum use of the damping properties of birch wood and to reduce unwanted frequencies without using extra damping. This results in optimal sustain for the core sound and thus in a crisp, articulated tone.
Birch is known and popular for its attack-rich and powerful sound. Their unique sound character provides a very precise and defined sound. Birch wood shells reduce unwanted frequencies, and crosstalk to adjacent shells is minimal, ideal for studio applications.
For the past 3 years I've been meeting with the Research and Development guys at Yamaha with the aim of bringing the Recording Custom Series up to date. I told Yamaha what I thought throughout the process, the result is that everything is a step up. They still feel like the Recording Custom, when you take them out of the box they don't feel new, they feel comfortable and I think that's good. The Bass Drum has a nice fat sound, the drum responds to different heads on it, and my goal was to have a simple snare drum design that could respond to a wide range of tuning. I think we did a great job, the new Recording Customs sound great and I think you'll like them'.
