The SEF11 1002 SDJ is equipped with 16 jingles that produces a crisp and bright sound, which incorporates its self exceptionally into electronic music. The 10"x2" maple shell deliver maximum strength, perfect curving and neutral tuning, due to the tension-free cross lamination of individual plies of wood (CLTF Cross Laminated Tension Free Process).
The main features of the SEF11 1002 SDJ include:
This a very good and well thought through side snare. The jingles give it a nice extra voice especially when played cross-stick. This drum also, sounds rather interesting with snares off. Rimshot is awesome, very powerful and cuts through surprisingly well!
Couple of things I would improve, which might increase costs in form of upgrades, so depends on your budget:
- Only tried it with stock heads, so still need to try it with my preferred heads to judge the sound possibilities.
- Throw-off mechanism for snares appears to be a bit cheapish and loose. If snares are too tight it is a challenge to turn snares back on with a single flick. With loosen snares one then needs to tighten the snares with the tension adjustment screw to achieve desired sound. Snares on/off action might not be a single flick or single hand flick.
- Upgrade the stock snare wires to see what impact it would have on the sound.
Mounting observation: Using regular snare stand designed for 13-14 inch drums (Sonor brand) gets a bit in the way where jingles are making it a bit fiddly to secure the snare quickly. Once in it is fine.
Overall a great sound addition to your kit, cajon kit (snare is highly portable) or secondary snare if your budget is tight.
