Originally introduced as a brand new and agile Les Paul design, the SG quite soon evolved into one of the immortal guitar designs in the hands of talented musicians like Tony Iommi, Eric Clapton and Angus Young. The construction of the '61 Les Paul SG Standard Reissue Stop Bar relies on classic ingredients with mahogany body and set mahogany neck in the traditionally slim "1960 SlimTaper" profile, while two Gibson Custom Bucker the matching powerful double-wound sounds of the SG. Of course, a faithful ABR-1/Stopbar combination and six Kluson tuners with authentic single ring wings are also on board this SG.

For the body construction of the 961 Les Paul SG Standard Reissue Stop Bar Cherry Red the Gibson Custom Shop uses a single solid piece of mahogany with authentic Doublecut SG shaping and easy access to the highest fingerboard positions. The slim neck heel of the mahogany neck also ensures this, while the agile "SlimTaper" profile of the sixties creates the best conditions for both classic rhythm riffs and advanced lead techniques. For historically accurate manufacturing processes, the Custom store uses hot hide glue at key gluing points such as the neck-body junction or the rosewood fingerboardgluing to create a smooth and resonant bond.

On the tonal side, the full soundstage of two Gibson Custom Buckers is available in neck and bridge positions. The two Custom shop-wound dual pickups rely on the characterful tones of Alnico III magnets to produce everything from articulate cleans to steamy gain tones that a guitarist's heart desires. Both pickups are unwaxed and matched to each other, which means that even the intermediate position of the 3-way switch skillfully combines the best qualities of both pickups. For precise tonal control the Gibson Custom Shop high quality CTS potentiometer, while the Treble roll-off of the tone pots takes place via genuine Black Beauty capacitors.
