The Zoom AM7 is a mobile microphone extension for smartphones with a USB-C connection. It not only significantly improves the sound quality of the video sound compared to fixed cell phone microphones, but also extends it with the option of stereo recording. You can choose between 3 stereo modes. The 90° (X/Y) variant offers a precise spatial image of the recorded material, with very good spatial localization. The 120° (wide X/Y) variant also has these advantages, although it displays the stereo panorama somewhat more broadly. Last but not least, M/S (center/side) stereophony offers a 100% mono-compatible stereo signal thanks to an integrated matrix, which retains its spatiality during stereo playback, but can also be played back in mono without loss. Since portals such as Instagram and Facebook now offer Android users the option of uploading video sound in stereo format, the Zoom AM7 is ideal for anyone who wants to make videos with high-quality stereo sound anytime and anywhere.
The AM7 microphone can be quickly adjusted to the current volume conditions using the large gain control on the front. The LED bar next to it provides direct feedback on the input level. For full auditory control, the AM7 provides the option of monitoring the audio material before, during and after recording via the combined headphone/line output. The in-house ZOOM Handy Recorder app, which can be downloaded free of charge, is recommended for this purpose. However, the Zoom AM7 also works seamlessly with other audio and video capture applications.
The microphone can be rotated into an audio and video position as required. If a pure audio recording is to be made, the two microcapsules are brought into a horizontal position in relation to the cell phone screen. For video recording, rotate it 90° to a vertical position and point the microphone towards the front camera or towards the screen camera for selfie mode.
