The Heritage Audio BabyRam is modeled after large studio consoles and is fully geared to their signal quality and accuracy. The controller works completely passively and influences the audio signal in the least possible way: Heritage Audio guarantees a difference between left and right channels of no more than 0.1dB. This is achieved by a rotary switch with 24 positions instead of the usual stereo potentiometer, which naturally allows for much better electrical values. The BabyRam can be connected to 2 stereo signals on both the input and output side, which can be switched between balanced (studio monitors) and unbalanced (household electronics) by means of a switch. The switches for mono, level reduction and mute provide classic monitoring functions at the push of a button and also allow the user to listen in as if he were at a high-end mixing console. Even comparative listening with 2 pairs of monitors is no problem with the Heritage Audio BabyRam.
My Focal monitors only have one (xlr) input and I like to use my studio as a listening room as well as for recording. I have an Apollo interface and a Cambridge streamer, so wanted a way to send both channels to my speakers and the Baby Ram fit the bill perfectly. It’s great that it doesn’t need any power and that it doesn’t alter the sound quality in any way.
I also plan to use it as a way train my ears to particular levels for mastering by measuring the spl in relation to the volume of the control room. So the fact that it has a stepped attenuator instead of a rotary type will be a massive help to set it at a particular level and leave it and allow my ears to get used to the volume level which will be a massive help even while recording and mixing, particularly when using compression as our ears are far to inclined to think something sounds better just because it is louder.
It may seem quite expensive for what seems quite a simple device, but the quality of the components used and the particular use it will provide make it money well spent in my book.
Excellent device!
Absolutely amazing construction, very solid feeling with nice detents. Dim, mute and mono buttons are especially useful. This has quickly become my most used piece of studio kit. Mainly the sound from this is absolutely excellent and not coloured or attenuated.
It does what you expect. I like the stepped volume pot - which is huge, but that makes it easier. I'm a big fan of the mono button and having a switch for balanced/unbalanced cables is great.
Solidly built.
