Since Udo Masshoff started playing drums at the age of nine a lot has happened. He can now call himself a real drum expert because he basically worked in almost every professional field drums have to offer. He lived the rockstar life with his band “Readymade” and played on small and big festival stages all over Germany.
After that he worked as a drum tech for bands like Die Ärzte, Max Herre and Royal Republic. At that time Masshoff also already gave his ideas to Paiste and Ludwig for creating new products.
But 2009 he wanted more and formed his own company Masshoffdrums, where also this awesome snare was created and built. As that still wasn’t enough for Masshoff, he opened up his own drumming school which specialized on tuning. He noticed that a lot of drummers were not able to properly tune their instruments, so Masshoff wanted to give his drum tech-wisdom to others.
Evans and Masshoff got together and created the “Drumtuning Revolution Tour” to teach drummers across Germany and Austria how to tune their drums in the right way. Music Store already hosted a few of these workshops.
The “Big Chief” Snare – A custom made instrument from another planet
Masshoff’s Big Chief Snare surely is one of the best in its field worldwide; a real workaholic in the studio as well as on stage with a sturdy and high-quality handling. Big Chief is manufactured with a great and masterly attention for detail, which already makes it a modern classic of production and studio recording.
High-quality shell hardware
The Snare almost weighs eight kilos and was shaped from a single piece of steel which makes it completely seamless. At the upper end Big Chief has a strengthening ring which optimizes the sound even more. It is made from 500 single pieces. An adjustable Trick-Strainer strains the snare wires in the best way possible and the massive Die-cast Hoop with ten screws each gives it its crisp incomparable sound.
Tuning screws with ball catch
Another spectacular feature are the Tuning Screws which work with a ball catch: Every rotation of the screw makes a ball roll through. The rolling ball creates a clicking noise; it is almost like being able to change the gears of your snare. This technology makes it basically impossible to tune the Big chief in the wrong way.
Masshoff also included Slingerland-Beavertail-Lugs which count to the best hardware pieces on the market for almost a century. A sleaze pad prevents interfering frequencies. Masshoff promises that his 42 snare wires are completely handmade and grant the snare with a firm and loud sound. A snare like that also has to look good and thank god it does! Due to the raw steelkessel and the stylish Masshoff badge, Big Chief is also a piece of eye candy and all in all a piece of art.
