Already in the 1960s Sonor inspired the world of drums with the drums of the Teardrop series, whose name is based on the drop shape of the tensioning brackets. Stars of the then drum scene such as Connie Kay, Roy Haynes and Sonny Payne were among the advocates of the drum series, which at that time was already of the highest quality. The original drums from this musically exciting time have meanwhile become extremely rare collector's items and only a few drummers still enjoy this legendary drum sound today. Sonor took the popularity of the Teardrop series as an opportunity to launch the Vintage series. The vintage drums are much more than just a tribute to the legendary predecessors. They correspond in large parts to the original drums from the 60s, however, peppered with the latest technology and manufactured according to the latest production methods.
The Vintage Series drum boilers
The boilers of the vintage drums are glued from a total of 9 layers of beech wood using the "CLTF" process (Cross Laminated Tension Free) to a perfect round shape. This gives them an overall thickness of just 6 mm, a first-class prerequisite for excellent vibration behaviour. Despite the low wall thickness, they do not require additional reinforcement rings. The round ridge of the vintage boilers ensures maximum fur-to-boiler contact, which means that the vibrations are better transmitted to the boiler. This also gives the sound an extra portion of warmth and a slightly shortened sustain.
The boiler hardware
As already mentioned, the design of the Teardrop series clamping brackets originates from the Teardrop series. The vintage bucks, however, only resemble their models in appearance, because inside the bucks there is the latest technology in the form of the Sonor TuneSafe system, which is responsible for tuning stability. In the Tom Toms, the chic bucks are offset, i.e. each buck is slightly offset from its respective counterpart. The flanged "Superprofil" steel tension wheels of the Teardrop era have received a small lift-up and, together with the curved Vintage Sonor logo, complete the noble and high-quality appearance of the Sonor Vintage Drums. The skins come from Remo.
