The Fender Custom Shop Rory Gallagher Relic Stratocaster 3-Color Sunburst is an authentic replica of the Irish guitar idol's 61 Sunburst Strat, which bears the unmistakable marks of a life on the road. Accordingly, the lightweight Alder body is wrapped in the remains of the classic sunburst finish, while the back of the bolt-on maple neck is freed from the finish and fits comfortably in the hand. In addition, three Fender Custom '60s single coils provide authentic vintage sounds with lively dynamics, skilfully covering Gallagher's musical palette between blues-rock, folk and jazz. Naturally the Fender Rory Gallagher Signature Stratocaster RW 3-Color Sunburst is equipped with a Fender American Vintage Synchronized Tremolo and the authentic set of five Sperzel tuners and one Gotoh tuner.
In the construction of the Fender Rory Gallagher Signature Stratocaster, the Fender Custom Shop naturally follows the insights gained after a thorough analysis of Gallagher's Number One guitar. Accordingly, select light alder is used for the body, while the bolt-on maple neck features the authentic "Early '60s C" profile for a comfortable playing feel. The rosewood fretboard carries the dark clay dot inlays of the period, with a "mismatched" plastic dot placed in the 12th fret mimicking a Gallagher repair. Last but not least, the guitar carries the authentically reproduced remnants of the classic sunburst nitrocellulose finish, which not only conveys the authentic vintage feeling but also supports the free and vibrant sound of the electric guitar.
On the guitar amp, the Fender Custom Shop Rory Gallagher Relic Stratocaster RW 3-Color Sunburst naturally impresses with the authentic Gallagher sound in the wide spectrum between blues-rock, Irish influenced folk and jazz. Responsible for this are three Fender Custom '60s single-coil pickups which, thanks to the original manufacturing features, not only offer high dynamics but also convince with an extremely clear tone with a bell-like sound development and fast attack. The pickups of the Fender Rory Gallagher Signature Strat are controlled via the historically correct 3-way circuit with master volume and two tone controls.
Last but not least, the Fender Rory Gallagher Signature Stratocaster RW 3-Color Sunburst is equipped with authentic hardware. Accordingly, the traditional Fender American Vintage Synchronized Tremolo enables smooth and beautiful vibratos. The headstock, on the other hand, uses five Sperzel tuners for the A to E strings, just like the original, while a "mismatched" Gotoh tuner tunes the low E string.
Rory Gallagher's legendary 1961 Fender Stratocaster is probably one of the most famous electric guitars in the history of blues and rock. Gallagher acquired the Fender Stratocaster, originally painted in sunburst and considered the first of its kind in Ireland, in 1963 as a second-hand instrument in Cork and from then on used it as his Number One on stage and in the recording studio. Due to the heavy usage, the electric guitar lost most of its finish within a short period of time, but was never re-varnished by Rory Gallagher, who believed that the woods freed from the varnish would breathe more freely and sound better. Rory Gallagher was no stranger to repairs and modifications to his Fender Strat. For example, one of the classic clay dots in the rosewood fingerboard, which had fallen out due to intensive use, was replaced by a white plastic dot, while tuners and especially the nut were often replaced. The circuitry also underwent changes over the years, including a 5-way switch and modified tone control. After Gallagher's unexpected death in 1995, employees of the Fender Custom Shop had the opportunity to thoroughly examine the legendary 61er Strat in 1997 for a Reissue series, initially limited to 40 pieces. After the great success and countless requests for another edition, the Fender Custom Shop decided to include the Fender Rory Gallagher Signature Stratocaster in the regular Custom Artist series.
