The Critter & Guitari ETC is a HDMI video synthesizer that reacts to music and creates endlessly fascinating visual effects. The ETC receives audio data via a mono jack input, processes it internally and reproduces the sound via the HDMI output. This device is suitable for live visuals and working on music videos or programming your own graphics and pictures.
The ETC contains a variety of pattern generators called modes. Each mode responds differently to the audio input from smooth, wavy patterns to fast, fire-like animations. The background colour is controlled globally by a slider. You can also program your own modes for the ETC. Installing a USB Wi-Fi adapter turns the ETC into a Wi-Fi hotspot that allows you to edit and create the modes directly from the web browser. With the help of the screenshot button you can save the current frame as JPEG on a USB storage device. A MIDI input is included so the ETC can be automated with other devices or computer software.
This is a great little video synth for those interested in starting to explore video synthesis. There's the ability to add other scenes through an interface system which I haven't explored yet and you can download patches made by other people. This certainly expands on the range of options that come in the box and gives the ETC a lot more flexibility than first appears.
In terms of the aesthetic that you can get from it - it's definitely personal taste. I personally love the aesthetic and it really fits with the music that I'm using it for. I'd definitely say that it's not for everyone so have a look at a number of videos before you buy.
