The Moog Grandmother is a semi-modular analogue synthesizer, inspired by the great modular synthesizers of the past. The sound engine, modulation engine and on-board spring reverb tank are entirely analogue in nature, and Grandmother also features an easy to use arpeggiator and sequencer. One of the strongest aspects of Grandmother is her accessibility - whilst capable of highly complex sounds, the semi-modular design requires no knowledge of patching, meaning musicians of any skill-level can begin producing meaningful analogue synthesis.
Aside from its main application, Grandmother can also perform in the role of an analogue audio processor for external sound sources, as well as powerful keyboard front end for expanding a Mother-32, DFAM or Eurorack modular system.
The main features of the Moog Grandmother include:
I am just getting to grips with this compact semi-modular synthesizer, and I am very impressed with the build quality and the sound. I think the price is just about right for a genuine Moog product, and it should last a lifetime. A synthesizer without presets does require a little more effort, but in time, my understanding and knowledge should improve. I would recommend this purchase.
UPDATE:
I’m a bit Disappointed! I liked this synthesizer a lot, nice sound, lots of features and of course it’s a Moog. Unfortunately, after just 4 weeks of use it failed in a quite spectacular way. Having been used for just 2 hours one day and while in another room, my wife and I smelt burning coming from the study. The room was full of smoke and it was a while before I realized what had happened. The Grandmother seemed to be working, but the sequencer section was not functioning and must have burned-out for some unknown reason? DV247 replied promptly when informed of the problem and the Grandmother is currently being shipped back for a replacement. My main concern of this instrument is future reliability and I hope this instrument was just a rogue item and not typical. I live in hope for the replacement. My advice would be to keep the shipping box just in case!
After experimenting with Cp3 mixers and ladder filters attempting to replicate the 'Moog' sound I finally got a real one– it's a joy to play this beautifully designed machine.
Fantastic, organic sound creation and more of a genuine musical instrument than any other synth I have played. Moog craftsmanship, and modules within which would each set you back the asking price of the entire synth if you tried to buy them individually!
