With the Kramer SM-1 EMG Candy Red, the legendary guitar maker once again proves that it knows how to build genuine shredder axes. Accordingly, the electric guitar offers a neck-through construction with neck and body made of mahogany, which, thanks to the "Slim Taper" profile, allows any solo of light speed on the ebony fingerboard to easily get out of hand. Two active EMG SA single coils and a splittable EMG 81TW humbucker provide the right, extremely hot rock sound. Last but not least, the Kramer SM-1 offers a Floyd Rose FRT-1000 and uninhibited Whammy Bar action.
The heart of the Kramer SM-1 is undoubtedly the full-length mahogany neck, which lies comfortably in the hand thanks to the slim slim "slim taper" profile, so that even the most virtuoso solo goes out of hand as if by itself between the 24 frets of the ebony fingerboard. Historic Kramer" inlays mark the layers so that orientation is not lost. Also glued to the neck are body wings made of mahogany, which promise a rich pressure in the sound.
For an adequate sound conversion, the Kramer SM-1 EMG Candy Red is equipped with hot EMG active pickups, which make the amplifier sweaty. The EMG 81TW Humbucker, installed on the bridge, not only impresses with the striking assertiveness of its focused mid-range spectrum, but also with authentic single coil sounds thanks to the option for coil split. In the neck and mid-position, active EMG SA pickups also deliver extremely transparent sounds with bell-like sound development.
As a genuine shredder guitar, the Kramer SM-1 also offers the proven Floyd Rose FRT-1000 tremolo, which, thanks to its double locking construction, can easily take even the most uninhibited Whammy Bar actions without detuning the electric guitar. A practical detail here is the holder for all required Allen wrenches on the back of the headstock, on which Kramer Die Cast mechanics also work.
Kramer Guitars SM-1 EMG Candy RedThe guitar itself is a winner. Sleek black looks can’t go wrong, the binding and finish is excellent. The pickups are superb, the tonal options cover everything with eight different settings including in between cleans and a very thick screaming hum bucker sound so it does everything I could want. The high fret access is brilliant with the trough neck build. It feels heavy enough that it’s not a toy but is slim and comfortable enough to be considered ergonomic and not too heavy.
The bad points I would say are all down to the supplier and not the manufacturer, they were as follows:
It arrived with no whammy bar, I am in the process of waiting to hear from dv247 to let me know if they will send it to me or offer some kind of compensation.
The set up was quite bad, I would assume it came straight from a factory and not a tech. The neck was overly tight and the low frets all buzzed quite badly, I loosened the truss rod a fair bit and the buzzing completely went away. The fret board was dry, so I oiled it. The frets were a bit dirty so I polished them. Now it plays like a dream and to be fair it still has the same strings it arrived with so it’s not all bad. I personally feel that £700 is not a small amount to part with for a fiddle so I would expect it to have been a bit more nicely set up on arrival, that’s not a fault of Kramer though and the guitar is an excellent bit of wood in my opinion, it feels very solid and professional, the floyd stays in tune to the point where I am actually quite baffled after playing for two hours in a hot room. A five star guitar with a three star customer experience if you ask me, I recommend the SM-1 to any serious guitar player looking for a solid bit of kit.
