The Zoom G1 FOUR multi-effects unit convinces with a multitude of first-class guitar sounds at an extremely attractive price-performance ratio. Accordingly, the compact effects pedal offers more than 60 simulations of well-known guitar amplifiers, speakers and effects, ranging from classic vintage clean and overdrive sounds to effect impregnated ambient spheres and brute metal. The Zoom G1 FOUR also connects to Zoom Guitar Lab software via the USB port, which allows editing and archiving on the computer. The Zoom G1 effect processor also sports an integrated 30-second loop recorder and a drum computer whose 68 rhythm patterns provide the right beat for almost every musical style.
I can't speak to it's use in a live setting , that's not what I bought this for but to have at home to record whether bedroom music or demos it's perfect. The effects are great they're easy to use, the older Zoom models were a bit laborious to set up and get sounding right but this has enough knobs to feel like you are just setting up any stand alone pedal. The distortions, the delays, reverbs etc are all good but it's the amp modelling and the EQ options that make it a great little tool to work with. No amp or no room for one in your apartment where your neighbours will pound the walls if you so much as sneeze too loud? No problem !!! this little guy's got you covered. A little tinkering and your demos sound better, a little more and you can get a reasonably good sound for home recordings.
The looper is great, its easy to use. The tuner is good. What's not to love ? Plug this into your computer or your four-track or whatever recording devise you've got on with the earphones and you have a decent sounding pedal board and amp which takes up as much space as a box of chocolates. No one will be any the wiser.
I'm sure I sound like an absolute shill for Zoom. I don't care I have a bunch of their gear and I love it all. Is it built to survive the apocalypse? No. Most of the stuff I own is plastic. Is it as warm and distinctive as Electro-harmonix or Boss ? No, but it's cheap and it's solid and it works. Is it going to sound perfect through your huge amp? I don't know but it's probably not the point. Me - I make music at home with cheap gear because I have no money or space. Zoom are a gift to home recorders everywhere.
And thanks to everyone at DV247 as well. Very helpful during a difficult time to get products shipped efficiently.
For quiet practice I have been using pro DAW, amp sims, reverb, interface and computer, which sounds great and versatile but is a lot to set up. I got the zoom as a cheap portable alternative which I hoped would sound close. Main thing I wanted was convincing amps and cab impulses. I am a bit fussy.
This ‘can’ and for me has delivered in spades. It sounds excellent. Not all the amps or cabs sound good, but most not only sound like an amp or cab, they sound like the one they are meant to be. Note that the dirty amps only sound good dirty and the clean amps only sound good clean.
Caveat - all the cabs default to the cab being off. Most of the 50 patches were useless or horrible to me. But with the pc/Mac editor and a lot of patch reconstruction/replacement, I have an amazing practice tool that is very inspiring.
Highlights for me are the marshalls, fender twin, hi watt and dual rectifier. The emulations of the klon, big muff and rat as well as lots of others certainly capture the spirit of the real thing.
It also takes real pedals nicely with patches set up as just amp can and ambience/reverb
I am not sure I would want to record professionally with this and have not used this as a pedal for an amp - prefer either real pedals to a real amp or high end amp and pedal sims in my DAW. But for a crazy inexpensive practice device feeding studio quality headphones, this is amazing!
This is the first pedal I’ve bought. It came 4 days ago (shipping was unexpectedly quick in these times), I’m very happy so far although would love it if I was able to save my loops.
