The Music Store 20U Studiorack is made from 18mm clear lacquered birch plywood with embedded aluminium rails for the easy installation of rack units. It is angled at 7 degrees for a more convenient display of rack units and comes with all the screws and grommets necessary for its assembly.
Inexpensive solution, perfect for painting or lacquer - if you leave it like this its very vulnerable to stains though. A bit tedious to get all the bolts into the rails, but very flexible because of it (i.e. you are not constrained to 20 holes, you can slide your equipment half a U apart and so on.
Really impressed with the workmanship on these. Really well made and properly sanded and smoothed corners.
I wanted them darker to match my studio. So I used some danish oil and stained them to a cedar colour and they look amazing.
The quality is very good for the price.
I wasn’t completely sure about the 7 degree angle before ordering, but it works well.
Assembly is easy, but a hex driver works much better than the included hex key (hard work).
The extruded rack strips are a clever design and look neat. They happened to be slightly wider than some old rack strips I wanted to fit at the back of the cabinet, so for those I had to make a shim out of some 6mm nuts.
Also on the extruded rack strips for anyone wondering: they are screwed to the wooden sides. Which is good if you were thinking of modifying the cabinet in any way.
The unvarnished cabinets that I ordered have a freshly cut wood smell, but this is slowly fading.
The included plastic covers for the screws are not quite the matching shade of the wood, but that’s me being picky.
A 4u rack drawer was also purchased and this works well. It self-closes nicely due to the angle of the rack, but stays open when extended fully.
