The Heil Sound PR 40 is a dynamic large-diaphragm microphone of the highest quality class, surpassing even the PR 30 and PR 31 models in terms of transmission characteristics and versatility. The microphone has been developed in particular for use in the broadcast sector for the broadcast-quality recording of speaker voices and accordingly impresses throughout with a clear, high-resolution and present sound. However, due to its wide frequency range and very well presented midband, the Heil Sound PR 40 is also suitable for a wide variety of sources to be recorded: Distorted to heavily distorted electric guitars and basses get a strong harmonic spectrum with a stable fundamental, kick drums and percussion a dry, detailed bass foundation and powerful punch, snares are presented plastically and fat.
Unlike traditional models of its design and class, the PR 40's bass range is much cleaner, allowing for much better perception of the fundamental range and overtone structures. Due to the controlled bass and the presence boost from about 3kHz, the placement of source signals picked up with this microphone in the mix is noticeably easier and gets by with less EQing and less compression: This is because, as a dynamic microphone, the PR 40 inherently achieves a compression effect while offering the resolution and proximity of a condenser microphone. The warm, finely pronounced mids of the PR 40 ensure a natural, rounded sound image at all times.
