Pioneer DJ DDJ-SZ 4-Channel Serato DJ ControllerPionner DDJ-SZ is well built, it looks great, it sounds great, and it is a great tool to get used to work with Pioneer CDJs and Mixers. Keep in mind though, its still a DJ controller that requires a computer to run, and while you can map it to Traktor, this device is specifically made to work with Serato.
If youre an owner of DDJ-SX, when switching to DDJ-SZ, youll surely notice the difference and enjoy the improvements: better platters, jog tension adjust, multicolored pads, additional mic channel, color effects, hardware-generated oscillators, etc. Also, now youll never get to ruin your mix by accidentally touching the needle-search.
However, from time to time, theres still a risk to bump into the left tempo fader, since the decks are identical and the left side is pretty crowded.
While the 4 color effects are post fader, the Serato effects are not, turn down the volume fader - and the effect is gone. Thats a real let down for a professional DJ controller, since it limits the possibilities to operate with FXs in a more creative way.
Playing mainly minimal and techno music, the oscillator turned out to be pretty useless to me. Occasionally, I can use "Noise", but its not something I couldnt deal without. Although, for a DJ whos focused on the mainstream audience, the oscillator might be of a great use.
The mixer is excellent, the perfomance pads are responsive, the platters are very accurate, so for anyone who is just starting his journey into the DJ world - this is what you need to learn mixing and beatmatching. Its a good controller, both for beginners and professional musicians. If youre not bothered by its minor drawbacks and you chose the Serato path, the purchase of a Pioneer DDJ-SZ will be completely justified, and it will reward you with excellent features, sound and build quality.
