The Rapier 33 marks the return of a true icon of the sixties and seventies that lent its distinctive voice to numerous beat combos of the era. Designed by none other than Alan Entwistle, the electric guitar with triple pickup configuration and slanted center pickup received some useful upgrades and a welcome facelift in the reissue, but without disregarding the classic charm of the role model.
The basic construction of the Rapier 33 is composed of a body made of okoumé with a traditional doublecut design and a neck made of Canadian maple. The neck isquadruple-bolted to the body and features a Soft C neck profile, which, in combination with the 22-fret rosewood fingerboard and additional zero fret, ensures buttery-smooth playability and carefree layered playing.
The pickup equipment of the Rapier 33 also comes from the pen of Alan Entwistle and is formed by three EWR64 mini humbuckers in neck, middle and bridge position. Here, the additional bass cut switch provides the classic jangle sound of the sixties when needed, while the 3-way switch controls the neck and bridge pickups either individually or together. The slanted midrange pickup now has a separate slide switch for activation.
In order to expand the playing possibilities of the instrument and multifaceted vibrato sounds, the combination of a tuning stable roller bridge and a classic Rapier vibrato is used on the Rapier 33. The six Wilkinson EZ-Lok tun ers also play an important role here. Thanks to the locking function, they get by with fewer axle windings and thus additionally improve the tuning stability of the instrument even after the wildest vibrato use.
