Unregulated deforestation and overexploitation severly endangered certain wood species that can no longer regenerate due to the high rate of extraction. bony and koa are prime examples of this, with their dwindling populations leading to significant ecological concerns. In response, Taylor Guitars has taken action, prioritizing sustainability in its practices.
As ebony has been particularly favoured for fretboards due to its smooth. dense texture, which is particularly comfortable for players. IIts striking appearance also makes it a popular choice for bridges, headstock overlays, bridge pins, and bindings. However, the high demand and the flourishing black market outstripped the stocks, so that ebony ended up on the Red List of endangered species in 1994. In addition, only the deep black heartwood, which makes up only a fraction of the tree, was used, resulting in a disproportionately large amount of waste in production. To help protect these precious forests, Taylor has partnered with the Crelicam Wood Mill in Yaoundé, Cameroon, since 2011, promoting sustainable practices by making use of waste products and ensuring responsible consumption.

Over the past 20 years, the koa acacia population has faced significant decline. Unsustainable logging and overharvesting have taken a toll, and the only way to reverse this trend is through proactive measures and reforestation. To help address this, Taylor Guitars, in partnership with Pacific Rim Tonewoods, launched the Siglo Tonewoods Project, with the goal of restoring the Hawaiian rainforest. This large-scale cultivation area for koa acacia and other species will allow for controlled, sustainable use of koa wood.
