With the F8n, Zoom offers an excellent and extremely flexible 8-channel/10-track field recorder & mixer, which has just about everything a sound designer's heart desires. This includes not only a robust housing with many mic/line options, but also intuitive and effective features such as Advanced Look-Ahead Hybrid Limiter and Zoom AutoMix, which optimize workflow and sound. Despite the compact design, every controller, every socket and every button is easily accessible, while the LCD display provides the necessary information on the respective signals. Practically, the F8N can also be used as an 8-in/4-out USB audio interface (@96kHz), making work even more flexible. In general Zooms F8n works in 192 kHz/24 bit format and delivers excellent results for every project. Filter, mid-side decoding, Mp3 export and compatibility with iOs devices are just a few of the many useful things you can use to achieve your goal without much trouble.
"When you're putting together a kit, you shouldn't have to compromise. I don't think there's anything that I couldn't do with the F8n."
- Anne Tolkkinen | Sound Designer
Starting with the robust, roadworthy case, the F8n scores with many connections: These include combo jacks, a USB port, SD card slots, a headphone out, TA3 Mini-XLR Outs, Time Code I/O and a 10-pin mic connector - enough to be prepared for all common applications. All functions are clearly visible and easy to operate and reach, so that even in hectic situations you won't sweat.

Equipped with an Advanced Look-Ahead Hybrid Limiter, the F8n prevents overdriving - no matter what. With an additional delay time of one millisecond, the limiters look ahead and start working before the signal is even recorded. Limiting is also used in all 8 channels simultaneously and in full resolution plus 10-20 dB headroom to get the best out of every take.
To ensure crystal clear images even at high input levels, the F8n has extremely low background noise (-127 dBu ON), while gain of up to 75 dB can be achieved. Mic/Line levels can also be controlled via XLR and jack sockets.
Zoom AutoMix is a wizard that automatically mixes the volume ratios of unwanted ambient sounds. So you can fully concentrate on a balanced mix.
Thanks to the Temperature Compensated Crystal Oscillator (TCXO), the F8n generates a time code with an accuracy of 0.2 ppm, ideal for hair out syncing audio and video. Even when switched off, the accuracy continues at 0.2 ppm.
In addition to the 4-pin Hirose connector, which allows you to work with external 9-18V DC battery packs, you can also use 8AA batteries or the included AD-19 AC AA adapter. The power sources can be changed by a user-set voltage level to allow recordings to run without interruption.
This mode allows you to create security tracks by doubling recordings from input 1-4 to 5-8. The tracks can be individually controlled and thus also changed in gain, limiting and more.
Often you wish you had pressed play for a few seconds to capture the last spontaneous words of an interviewee. The Pre-Record function helps and takes 6 seconds before you even press the Record button!
For all 360° audio fans, the F8n offers an Ambisonics mode including A-B decoding, gain and settings linking as well as a metering screen. And if you need the ultimate VR rig, you can easily combine the Zoom F8n with the Sennheiser AMBEO Mic. This mobile setup enables premium 360° audio anytime, anywhere.
The F8n works with the BWF compatible WAV format up to a resolution of 192 kHz and 24 Bit. Recording to MP3 can also be done in no time at bit rates of 128, 192 or 320kbps.
In addition there is a flexible signal routing of all inputs and outputs. In addition to the hybrid limiters, the F8n high-pass filter reduces unwanted noise, provides phase reversal and mid-side decoding. Input and output delays are also available.
Those who like to mix over iPads will be happy about the Zoom F8 Control App for iOS devices. Pannings, fader levels and transport controls can be controlled via Bluetooth LE Protocol, while input levels, time codes and battery status can be displayed at any time. Even file and metadata information can be subsequently entered.
The Zoom F8n is exceptional. It's a small unit, but feels really robust. It has really good quality sounding preamps with very little noise added to the mix. It can be powered in numerous ways. It has two SD slots so that you can actually record to both cards simultaneously, in case there is an issue with a corrupt card. You can also set up a limiter for one recording just in case something comes a bit too hot on the main channel you are manually recording on. Really good feature. It also has the option to send and receive Time Code, so you can sync it with a camera if you are on set. Can't really fault the unit. The guys at DV247 are great too. I've been buying gear from them for around 15 years now!!!!
