The Broadkaster Series from Gretsch resurrects a legend.
The origin of the “Great Gretsch Sound” goes all the way back to the `20s, a time when Gretsch began setting the standard with a 3-ply laminated shell design. The sound was rich, resonant with purely musical tones that are legendary today. Up until the end of the '50s, its unique construction is what helped set the Gretsch Broadkaster series apart from the rest of the pack. Gretsch is now breathing new life into this classic with a double reissue of this iconic drum set. In order to satisfy both the nostalgics as well as technocrats, the Broadkaster Series is available in two versions: Vintage and Standard. The Standard is equipped with modern hardware while the Vintage series stays true to its roots. Originally produced in Brooklyn, NY, The Broadkaster Series continues to be crafted by hand in the USA, today in Ridgeland, South Carolina.
Broadkaster Shell Construction - Thin Shell, Fat Sound
Consisting of only 3 layers of North American maple/poplar/maple, the shells are relatively thin delivering a crisp sound. The shells are not equipped with any reinforcement rings; they do however feature an interior-ply scarf joint that provides a higher grade of structural integrity to these thin and musical shells. Like all USA-made Gretsch drums, the shell interiors are finished with classic Gretsch Silver Sealer. The shell bearing edge of the snares is a Gretsch typical 30° towards the shell's interior, helping to produce the wide range of tones with maximum attack and projection. Premium Remo heads round off the package. Keeping the heads in place are Gretsch's “302” 3.0mm, double flanged steel hoops. Constructed from a thicker gauge of steel to withstand today's more aggressive playing styles.
Gretsch Broadkaster Hardware Selection - Modern or Old-School
The Standard Version combines the best of the old with that of the new by equipping the Vintage shells with modern hardware. The "Lightning Throw Off" is an example of an extremely user-friendly and smooth operating tool showcasing the concept of the Broadkaster Series. Lugs of the Standard package are little bit more heavy duty, as well as the spurs and GTS tom suspension.
The Vintage Version of the Broadkaster offers a piece of hand crafted art in the form of the "Microsensitive Throw Off". The rest of the Broadkaster kit also includes other 1950s style hardware components such as drum mufflers, floor tom leg brackets, rail consolette tom holder, spurs, bass drum t-rods, throw-off and key holder. Together with the double flanged hoops and equipped with premium Remo heads, the Broadkaster drums create a nostalgic impression both in sound and look. Something very special for admirers of the classic models.
All of the hardware from both packages is completely chrome plated and fits optically to the selection of the four beautiful, assertive finishes. The finishing touch is provided by a new serialized internal shell label and the iconic Gretsch USA brass Round Badge.
