With the Kramer SM-1 EMG Black, the legendary guitar forge once again proves that it knows how to build unadulterated shredding axes. Accordingly, the electric guitar features a neck-through construction with a mahogany neck and body that, thanks to its slim taper profile, makes any light-speed solo on the ebony fingerboard come off easy. Two active EMG SA single coils and a split EMG 81TW humbucker provide the appropriate, extremely hot rock sound. Last but not least, Kramer's SM-1 electric guitar features a Floyd Rose FRT-1000 tremolo for uninhibited whammy bar action.
The heart of the Kramer SM-1 is undoubtedly the neck-through made of mahogany, which lies comfortably in the hand thanks to the slim taper profile, so that between the 24 frets of the ebony fingerboard every virtuoso solo comes off as if by itself. So that the orientation is not lost, "Historic Kramer" inlays mark the frets. Glued to the neck are also mahogany body wings, which, thanks to wide cutaways, expose the high registers of the neck.
For adequate tone conversion, the Kramer SM-1 EMG is equipped with hot active pickups from EMG, which really make the electric guitar amp sweat. The EMG 81TW humbucker installed at the bridge not only convinces with the striking assertiveness of its focused midrange spectrum, but also provides authentic single-coil sounds with crisp snap thanks to the coil-split option. In addition, active EMG SA pickups in the neck and middle positions deliver extremely transparent sounds with bell-like sound development.

The pickups are superb, the tonal options cover everything with eight different settings including in between cleans and a very thick screaming hum bucker sound so it does everything I could want. The high fret access is brilliant with the trough neck build. It feels heavy enough that it’s not a toy but is slim and comfortable enough to be considered ergonomic and not too heavy.
The bad points I would say are all down to the supplier and not the manufacturer, they were as follows:
It arrived with no whammy bar, I am in the process of waiting to hear from dv247 to let me know if they will send it to me or offer some kind of compensation.
The set up was quite bad, I would assume it came straight from a factory and not a tech. The neck was overly tight and the low frets all buzzed quite badly, I loosened the truss rod a fair bit and the buzzing completely went away. The fret board was dry, so I oiled it. The frets were a bit dirty so I polished them. Now it plays like a dream and to be fair it still has the same strings it arrived with so it’s not all bad. I personally feel that £700 is not a small amount to part with for a fiddle so I would expect it to have been a bit more nicely set up on arrival, that’s not a fault of Kramer though and the guitar is an excellent bit of wood in my opinion, it feels very solid and professional, the floyd stays in tune to the point where I am actually quite baffled after playing for two hours in a hot room. A five star guitar with a three star customer experience if you ask me, I recommend the SM-1 to any serious guitar player looking for a solid bit of kit.
