It features an integrated X/Y stereo microphone that achieves a 130 dB SPL limiting sound pressure level and two XLR/TRS combo jacks for line and microphone signals with switchable +48V phantom power. The microphone/line inputs can be used in parallel with the integrated stereo microphone to record up to four tracks in WAV, BWF or iXML format with a maximum resolution of 32 bits and a maximum sampling rate of 96 kHz. The microphone has a 2" color display, a built-in speaker, a 3.5 mm headphone output, a 3.5 mm microphone/line input for lavalier microphones and line-level sources, and a built-in mixer to adjust the audio level of each track. The H4essential also offers an audio guide function for blind or visually impaired people, making it easier to operate the device.
The microphone also supports timecode synchronization via the optional Zoom BTA-1
