Ortofon was founded in 1918 by Danish engineers Axel Petersen and Arnold Poulsen to explore the synchronisation of sound and image. Originally known as the Electrical Phono Film Company, the company specialised in film sound technology and developed one of the world's first synchronised sound film systems. In 1923, the first sound film with this system was shown at the Palace Theatre in Copenhagen. In 1947, the company was renamed to Ortofon, derived from the Greek words ‘orto fon’ for ‘correct sound’.
In the 1980s, Ortofon benefited from advances in material and manufacturing technology. Magnetic materials such as samarium-cobalt and neodymium enabled more compact and powerful cartridges and the 2M series released in 2007 is still very popular in the hi-fi sector today.
Ortofon also continues to set new standards in the DJ sector. The Concorde series, a moving magnet cartridge introduced in the 1980s, impressed with its excellent sound quality and became one of the most widely used DJ cartridges in the world. Released in 2018, the Concorde MKII series brought optimised models for different DJ styles.
Today, Ortofon stands for a successful combination of tradition and technological excellence. Through constant innovation and the use of state-of-the-art materials the company established itself many years ago as the global market leader for high-quality cartridges - for audiophiles and DJs alike.
